Tuesday night was a historic night for Northside Athletics, as it felt like the Crusaders turned the proverbial corner with their first outright men’s varsity region championship of any sport at the SCISA AA level. NCA entered the game against Orangeburg Prep with their season goals in tact and accomplished one of the main missions of the season in winning the region. Coach Bob McMillan was ecstatic about the win but also a little relieved at the outcome. “Players sure do know how to put the pressure on the coaches. After our loss the other night to Lee Academy, we knew we had to come out and take care of business. Our goal was to come out hitting and set the tone for the game by scoring first,” stated McMillan. Charlie Compton doubled in the first inning and Robert McMillan hit an RBI single to put the Crusaders in the lead early, 1-0. There were several other plays throughout the game that stood out to the large contingent of Crusader fans in attendance. Dylan Judy had an incredible stretch to snag an errant throw at first base for a huge third out early in the ballgame. The pitching was outstanding throughout the game for NCA with Robert McMillan leading the bandwagon for the first several innings. Mikah Conner then came in to relieve McMillan and was brilliant, shutting down the Indians for a few scoreless innings. Outstanding sophomore pitcher, David Lee Clamp, was ready if needed but was able to rest his arm for the night. Luke Cochran made what may have been the play of the night late in the game with the Crusaders holding a 3-1 lead. The ball was hit by the Indians hard to right field on a line drive and as Cochran was running full speed to close in on the ball, he fully extended to catch the ball as he hit the ground. If the ball hadn’t been caught, the game would have been tied at that point. The Crusaders never looked back and closed out the game with a 3-1 monumental win! Northside also recognized Ms. Nancy Brown on Tuesday night for all she has done for Northside Athletics this year, particularly Northside Baseball.
The Crusaders won again last night in their last regular season game of the year against Greenwood Christian, 13-11. The Crusaders finish the regular season 18-4 and 9-1 in conference play. The playoff brackets were just announced this afternoon, and Northside will play the winner of Thomas Heyward vs. Dillon Christian on Tuesday next week at home at 6:30pm. Come out and support your Crusaders as we enter postseason play!
